OPPA

Oppa aims to increase elderly independence through promoting socialising, mindfulness and exercise - for the purpose of the design - mind, movement and mingle.

The Problem Space

As the world's elderly population (over 65) increases in size, the net wellbeing of elderly is being put under strain as the effects of aging lead to the capabilities of existing institutions, systems and caregivers being exceeded by the amount of elderly dependency needs. Reducing the causes of dependency or dependency itself though its associated challenges.

Our Approach

Through our research we found that many elderly people were more concerned about the quality of their life and not the length of it. In order to maintain their high quality of life and independence, we found that many of those who were currently fulfilled with their lives had similar strategies - those of which could also be supported by further research. These strategies were then boiled down to 3 main areas:

Movement

Keeping your body healthy is necessary when trying to maintain independence and general wellbeing. Whether it be a short stroll or a run, we wanted to encourage movement at any level.

Mind

Cognition and mindfullness are of extreme importance when maintaining independence. Activities that promote brain cognition are important in preventing mental decline, and mindfullness was necessary to help elderly people to stay happy and positive.

Mingle

Loneliness has a direct correlation with a decline in independence in the elderly population. By encouraging our users to reach out to their loved ones often, we aim to improve their overall wellbeing.
